Let’s go hiking! We have multiple levels of hikes available and we’ll be working on the hiking requirements for each Cub Scout rank (please review hiking requirement beforehand and bring appropriate equipment).

CARPOOL: If you’d like to carpool, meet at St. Chad’s (7171 Tennyson) at 7:30 am to save on parking spaces and the day use fee, $3. Otherwise meet at the La Luz trail head at 8 am and bring $3 for the day use fee.

Bring your six essentials and be able to carry them on your hike: Water, Trail Food, Flashlight, Hiking First aid kit, Sun Protection, Whistle.

We’ll also be going over the Outdoor Code, Leave No Trace, and Buddy System before the hike.

Hiking opportunities:
EXPERT: Lanny Gilbertson (Scoutmaster, Troop 29) and some Scouts are going to hike ~7.8 miles to the top of Sandia and take the Tram back down. Extras to bring: extra water, lunch, a weather proof layer, $10 for a Tram ticket. (Two Deep Leadership required, a parent needs to participate with their Scout if they’d like to attempt this)

ADVANCED: The majority of Troop 29 will be hiking 5 miles (2.5 miles each way) with a map and compass for their 2nd Class Rank Requirement.

INTERMEDIATE: The Webelos-I Den will be doing their Webelos Walkabout Hiking Requirement, 3 miles (1.5 miles each way) or longer (can they keep up with the Scouts? I hope so!). Webelos need to bring a nutritious snack/lunch to enjoy on the hike, perform a leadership role (Trail Leader, First Aid Leader, Snack Leader) and prepare their Hiking First Aid Kit.

BEGINNER: Bears, Wolves, Tigers can hike an easy mile (half mile each way) or more (who knows how far they can go?)

Den Leaders: I could use your help going over your Den’s requirements, please review ahead of time, thanks!
